Isaiyil Thodangudhamma...

No words can do justice to describe the beauty and richness of this song...
It is amazing how the maestro treats the Hamsanadam family in such varied ways! Each of Sorgame enralum, Thenral vandhu ennai thodum, Om namaha and Isaiyil thodangudhamma (and more if I've missed out) stands out uniquely although in nearly the same raga...
(Isayil and Thenral though, are in "Vivahapriya", which closely resembles Hamsanadam)
Recently someone (by name Divya if I remember right) sang this SO beautifully in the Vijay TV show, "Paadum Office"- it was from there that I got inspired to record this.
I've used a bad mic, so bear with the slight hiss :(

Here's my attempt. Beg Pt.Ajoy Chakraborthy's pardon!!

Song: Isaiyil thodangudhamma
Movie: Hey Ram
Music: Ilaiyaraja
Lyrics: Ilaiyaraja
Singer: Ajoy Chakraborthy

Your feedback'd be appreciated. Thanks.

Nice rendition Sindhu. I think you could have used a higher pitch though.

Very melodious! Good 'brigas' too, But your voice could have had more depth, it sounds really "thin"- sounds like it's coming out of your throat without enough lung power ('naabhi') if you know what I mean.

Nice one Sindhuja.. Somehow the brigas in the part (end of vaanathil theyindhidum & the same line in the other charanam) seemed a little too rushed.

Ofcourse taking into the account the complexity and speed of the original rendition, I guess it's quite a good attempt :)

Well done as usual.. voice seems a bit light.. and as told in the blog a better mic would have a made a difference..

hi sindhuja, my wife landed up in your blog searching for the actual song. we saw Divya's wonderful rendition of this song in Paadum Office and you have simply beaten her. amazing voice and excellent rendition.

I like your deep soulful rendition here. I think that a higher pitch would not have done justice to this song. You have brought something of yourself to this song which makes it all the more pleasant on the ears! Will come back for updates.

Sindhu:

As usual true to the sangathis of the original in your beautiful tone. Good to hear.

I have heard an anecdote and I am not sure of its veracity. It seems after IR had composed the songs of the movie, Hariharan and other singers were summoned but pandit Ajoy could come only a bit late due to his committments. Hari had finished recording his song but he waited all day long for Ajoy to arrive. Once Ajoy arrived and was apprised that orchestration was ready for him to sing, he stepped into the room where IR and Hariharan were discussing.

Seeing Ajoy, Hariharan stood up in reverence. Ajoy asked him : "I am ready to learn the song, shall we start ?"

and Hariharan said : "panditji, hum aapko sikhaane nahin, par sirf aapki aawaz sunne ke liyE baithe hain." and IR after explaining the basic notes said :"This is the basic structure. You can improvise as you would like".

Well such a free rein is NEVER given to anybody by IR. The only person that I know who could take that liberty was Yesudas (not SPB ! - he always gets "maaththi paadittE baalu..naan sonna maathiriye paadu" comment from IR) who however is such a disciplinarian that he would hardly improvise on what IR would compose.

So most of the sangathis that you are hearing in the song are probably Ajoy's own (What a master he is !..I will give you some of his gems sometime) and what you have attempted is to try reproducing what Ajoy has sung. That in my opinion is an effort equal to dragging a hundred elephants with one hand for anybody. Keep it up !

HEY lets keep divya out of this !

how are these two's versions comparable ???
divya's was a LIVE performance. she did not have the luxury of retakes.

Oh and Divya's performance is incomparable anyway. :)

Nice voice Sindhuja :)
@ paran, arvindh
I respect ur opinion :) Just curious to know on what parameters u find Divya's performance lacking.

Sindhuja Bhakthavatsalam said...

Wow comments are taking an unexpected turn here :)
I personally think too that Divya was marvelous, a lot better than me. And this is why I have said I was "inspired" by her.
This is an objective evaluation and not plain modesty.
Thank you all. *Peace* :)

I'll introduce myself, b4 i post. I was the one who accompanied Divya and other singers on keyboard in Paadum office. Divya is one of my best friends but that has got nothing to do with what I'm writing here.
1. Brave attempt, first of all. I have not seen many better "attempts".
2. This pitch was probably not right for you. You have better control on the brihas in the low range.
{to be continued}

Navneeth Sundar said...

3. The sangathees and swarams were largely different from the original.
4. Sruthi - bang on - no issues there.
5. The brihas have slipped in many places, especially in the higher end (possibly bcos of pitch choice). Vaazhum Vaalibame esp. Also rushed sangathees in some places. Jus a lil more azhutham and better pitch should fix most of the things.
6. You CAN definitely do a much much better job with a few corrections, of pitch and dynamics, and a little practice in akaarams transitiong from low range to high range. It is here that whatever slip is there starts.
7. A real honest attempt, with a genuine attitude. Kudos 4 that :)

Very good singing! The brigas are wonderful. And as many have mentioned , the 'vanathil' briga is a bit rushed. Try to post the song with karaoke. I'd love to here it with!

Hi Sindhu,

Your rendition is brilliant. Honestly the clarity you brought to the lyrics made the song more endearing.

Sindhuja Bhakthavatsalam said...

Anonymous: Thanks for ur nice words. However, not sure what u meant by this:
"I ofcourse heard this song u singing in "paadum Office","
It was not me in the show, but another girl called Divya.

starlight said...

I always thought I had a pretty decent voice and when I first heard Divya sing this song in Paadum Office, I made an attempt and was surprised at how difficult it was to get the brigas. Ha Ha! So, this song motivated me to start learning Carnatic at 27 :) though I learnt a bit when I was young.

Amazing, amazing job. The brigas were a little rushed at the beginning I believe but as you got more comfortable with the song, they got a lot better :)

What a voice you have and to sing such a tough song so beautifully. I just got back a hand-written interview I did with Ajoy back in 2006 scanned by the hubby and stumbled across your blog over Vivahapriya Raga. Couldn't resist listening to your stunning rendition! WOW! May God keep you singing and sharing your voice with the world.

Hi Sindhu, Seriously you are gifted with a wonderful voice. Especially your brato was very nice , "vaanathil" & "uyirkale" was great and the sustaining was really good. But you could have concentrated on the lyrics, there were few words in both the charanams, you sang it wrong.
Could you please send me the last aalap of the song. But a very nice attempt .Kudos Sindhu.Great work..

Thanks Shamla and Srividya.

Nice Rendition.

I had the privilege to meet Sri TVG once he told me that "Sorgame Endralum" was not Hamsanadham - but it is Sarangadharini.

Is Sarangatharini and VivahaPriya one and the same - all along i was thinking that this was S'Dharini...do clarify if you know what's the difference ?
