endha mugam with Lalitharam

I have a lot to thank tfmpage for. Back in the day, that was my point of entry into the online world of musically like minded people. The Raga-Of-Song page (or ROS) was like home for a good 2-3 years and that's where I made some of my best musical associations. The song I'm presenting here today is the result of one such association- with Ram. Ram wrote the lyrics for which I composed the tune. This was one of my first compositions , and my very first experience with online collaboration (back then, Ram was in the US and me in India), which has become the order of the day today. Needless to say, it was a lot of fun! Although the song made its rounds within part of the ROS community and was quite well received, I think people were just being nice to me- probably because I was this kid just out of high school :P I now think the song was such an immature composition- half baked and cliched in a lot of ways despite some moving lines by Ram... (Not that I'm great now...!) Nevertheless, wanted to post it just for records- and to revisit those old ROS days... I can't believe it's been 9 years!!

Today, Ram is a noted music critic in the Chennai circles and the author of a book on the Carnatic music stalwart, G.N.Balasubramanyam titled "isaiulaga iLavarasar". I can only say I'm so pleased and proud! Way to go, Ram :)

This song goes out to my three good friends from ROS - Ram, Murali and Sheela. Glad to have met you all.

And dear blog visitor, will be glad to know what you thought of this piece!

Song: endha mugam
Ragam: Ragamalika (Darbari Kanada, Sahana, Ranjani, Charukeshi, Behag)
Thalam: Rupakam
Lyrics: Ramachandran Mahadevan (Lalitaram)

Sindhu,

Thanks for reminding of all those wonderful grad-school days when I had too much time on hand!

I'm glad I realised that writing for songs were not my cup of tea:-)

When I write your biography a few decades later, I can write on your journey from your early collaborations with mediocre lyricists to the legends in the music field:-)

I loved the sahana and behag renditions.

Thoroughly enjoyed!!! Every raga I heard I kept thinking, "This is the best". very well composed. I wish I knew Tamil better to fully appreciate Ram's lyrics !

Hyderabadi said...

I second Sumi. Could you post the meaning of the lyrics?

Like everyone above mentioned, excellent work. If you were this good back then,....hmmm.....just thinking !!!!

It gives me immense pleasure to have witnessed your progress as a musician and a keen thinker. Brings back all the good old memories.

Your composition is not naive. Some compositions can remain simple for the very fact that simplicity appeals to a bigger audience than complex compositions. And I always liked this maiden attempt of yours.

Beautiful. I liked the garland a lot. Ranjani is bit unfamiliar to me. Is it any similar to SriRanjani (doesnt seem so!)? The behag piece is very nice. I love that raaga somehow. But your rendition and composition, both are equally wonderful.

Sindhuja Bhakthavatsalam said...

@Deepthi: Wow, I now vaguely remember recording this (and other songs) for you on a cassette :) Fond memories! And thank you!! :)
@Ravishankar: Thanks for the suggestion, I will try it sometime. BTW, did you mean to say that Behag and Ranjani don't bring out the emotion well? neengaL sonnathu sariyaaga puriyavillai.
@Hyderabadi: I think it's a good idea to post a translation. Will do that soon. Thanks! (BTW, the composition is old but the recording is very recent)
@Murali: Glad you still remember this song. Thanks!

And once again to each and everyone of you for such encouraging words! Really appreciate it.

AWESOME!! GOD BLESS YOUR MUSIC TEACHER/S...
Do write some post about the teachers in your life...

Sindhuja Bhakthavatsalam said...

Johan: miga nandri!!
Krishnapriya: thanks a lot. I received my initial training of basics from Smt. Bhagyalakshmi, then learnt for about 6 years from Smt. Ranganayaki Sridharan, and then Smt. Lakshmi Raghavan and now from Smt Lalgudi Rajalaksmi, all from B'lore. Thanks for the idea- it will indeed be a helpful exercise to write about my experiences with each of them. I should do it sometime.

I dunno why u said it's an immature tune- this is very sophisticated! and the lyrics are beautiful - had to use mom as a dictionary! the mood through out the song was nice with the different ragams! :)

Sindhuja, Excellent set of tunes and very well sung. I can sense the bharathi influence on Ram for the lyrical style.

Very well done.

Do you sing professionally?
